Proper Vision is Vital for Learning & Development

Good vision can be a key to success when learning. Without clear vision, your child could struggle with tasks like seeing the board, reading, and using the computer. Vision also impacts other essential skills like hand-eye coordination, comprehension, and information retention.

How Often Your Child Should Have an Eye Exam

The American Optometric Association recommends that school-aged children see the optometrist at least once per year. Your child should see the optometrist once between ages 6 to 12 months and once between ages 3 to 5.

You might need to take your child to the optometrist more frequently if recommended by your pediatrician or optometrist. Factors that could influence this can include family history of eye disease or your child’s medical history.

If you notice any of the following symptoms in your child, you should make an appointment for a children’s eye exam as soon as possible.

• Delayed motor skills
• Excessive blinking or eye rubbing
• Difficulty maintaining eye contact
• Difficulty tracking or following objects

A Typical Children’s Eye Exam

We’ve been seeing children for eye exams since 1983 and use cutting-edge techniques to keep your whole family’s vision great. We assess your child’s vision using techniques tailored for their needs.

For example, in infants, we test their pupil responses and their ability to fixate on and follow objects. In preschool-aged children who usually don’t know their letters yet, we use shapes and symbols to test their vision instead of a standard eye chart. With these methods, we can make sure your child has great vision as they grow up.
