Protect Your Eye Health with Regular Eye Exams

Regular eye exams are the best way to keep your eyes healthy. Eye exams are not just an opportunity to have your lens prescription reviewed; they are vital for monitoring your eye health. Many eye diseases can initially develop without symptoms, but optometrists can spot the signs before they damage your vision permanently. The best way to protect your eye health is with comprehensive eye exams.

How Often You Should Have an Eye Exam

The American Optometric Association recommends that you have an eye exam every 2 years from age 18 to age 64. Age 65 and after, you should be visiting the optometrist every year. We typically recommend that you have an eye exam once per year, regardless of your age. Annual eye exams are particularly important if you have any of the following issues:

  • History of eye disease
  • Family history of eye disease
  • Certain health conditions, including
  • Vision impairment in one or both eyes
  • Eye surgery or previous eye injury

Color Vision Deficiency

Color vision deficiency, more commonly known as color blindness, is your eye’s inability to determine different shades of color. Most people with this condition can still see color, but it is difficult to properly distinguish which colors are actually being seen.

Color can be seen when photoreceptors in the macula, known as cones, read certain wavelengths of light to determine shades of red, blue, and green. The deficiency occurs when the cone’s pigments are unable to read the wavelength of the color being seen.

You can see if you have color blindness by taking the EnChroma colour blindness test here.

A Typical Eye Exam

Your eye exam will begin with us discussing your medical history and any concerns you might have. This is an opportunity for you to address any vision or eye health concerns, such as unexplained headaches or dry eyes. From there, we will evaluate your vision and ocular health thoroughly.

We will do a visual acuity test and update your lens prescription if needed. We will also use state-of-the-art equipment to assess your eye structures and eye health. If you have certain risk factors or you’re experiencing any issues, we may perform a dilated eye exam to help detect diseases like glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration.
