How to Handle Eye Care Emergencies
Do not rub your eye, and do not apply a bandage. Corneal abrasions increase the chance to develop infection. Because of the potential for infection, you should visit your optometrist for treatment, even if the scratch seems minor.
Immediately rinse your eyes for at least 15 minutes. It’s crucial you rinse your eyes for the full 15 minutes with cool, clean water. Even if the pain subsides earlier, any remaining residue can cause further damage to your eyes. When you’re done rinsing, seek medical treatment and, if possible, bring the container of the substance that affected your eyes.
Never attempt to remove a foreign object from your eye. Instead, gently bandage your eye to prevent the object from moving around and causing further damage. Then, proceed to your nearest emergency room for treatment.
